  • Fundamental Human Rights – Was The EFCC Right To Have Arrested Naira Marley?
  • Under the article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), it says “everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice”
Meanwhile, Naira Marley has been in the news for quite sometime now, famously for the statement he released on the internet about a forthnight ago, glorifying internet fraud (yahoo yahoo).
This statement has landed him in big trouble as it has caused him to be picked up by men of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
However, since he’s been in custody, many people have expressed their disappointments and questioned why Naira Marley would be arrested by the EFCC for an ordinary statement as this truncates his fundamental human right (Right to freedom of speech), while others feel the EFCC is so right to arrest him as he deserves it after glorifying a crime the law totally frowns at.
Taking you back to what one of the basics of fundamental right upholds that is written in the first paragraph of this piece, do you think Naira Marley has committed a crime that warrants him to incur the arrest of the EFCC or do you think he does not deserve the arrest as his fundamental human right has been snatched from him?
    What do you think?
